The Case of the Bed Wetting Child
Bedwetting is a natural occurrence in a person’s life and a bed wetting child is also a normal case. If your child happens to be a bed wetting child do not fret because time will eventually help in the healing process.
There are two types of bed wetting children and the first one is called Primary Enuresis. This case of a bed wetting child is the type in which a child never experienced a dry moment at night time or in some cases, the bed wetting child has never been dry at all. This kind of bed wetting child are usually attributed to two reasons. These are the physically or neurologically immature bladder and a deep sleeping pattern which a bed wetting child has. The next type is called Secondary Enuresis in which the bed wetting child has been dry during a period of time but occasionally experiences periods of being wet. This case of bedwetting is usually blamed on stress that the child experiences in their daytime period. Hospitalization, entering school, and the birth of a sibling are some causes of bed wetting in a child. Other instances in which a bed wetting child experiences secondary Enuresis is a parent’s divorce, alcoholism in the family, financial pressure, and other unusual circumstances in which the security and stability of the child is threatened.
The effects of bedwetting to a bed wetting child usually attack the self-confidence of a child. This is because a bed wetting child is often embarrassed about their behavior which results to the withdrawal or refusal of the child to involve themselves into such activities. This in turn, turns the bed wetting child into a kid that has low self-esteem and self-image. The element of trust in them is diminishing and is usually replaced by doubt and angst. Some bed wetting children considers themselves as embarrassment in the family as well as to their parents. This only adds to the child’s discomfort as well as angst and in turn, only makes their bedwetting problem worse. A bed wetting child does not usually involves themselves in active situations like playing sports or rigorous activities because they are afraid that once they forgot about their condition, their bedwetting condition would show and they would be the laughingstock of the school or neighborhood.
For parents that have a bed wetting child, the first key in helping them is to understand the situation that they are going through. It is better not to make them feel that you are embarrassed because of their situation or you are ashamed because of their behavior. This would only worsen the condition of the bed wetting child. Treat them with patience and understanding because they would respond more if a parent shows that they are indeed loving and understanding problems. Parents should also guide their bed wetting child into behavior treatments which could aid the child into controlling their urinating activities at night time. This means that a parent must always be in constant guard in the situation and must check the situation instead of not paying attention.
A bed wetting child is usually sensitive therefore; all the love and support would help them go through this stage. In behavior treatments, patience and understanding should be practiced because it is a long term process. It is not an instant solution like medication because medication is harmful to the child’s health. The road to healing a bed wetting child is through the help of both parents and child.
