Bedwetting Products

According to NHS Direct, bedwetting affects 1 out 7 children who are aged 5 and 1 out of 20 kids who are 10 years old. And this occurs more often to boys than girls.

Bedwetting also affects children who are in puberty and also, adults. From a study conducted by the Pacific International Ltd., an organization that aims to help bedwetting adults and children overcome this problem, they found out that in the adult population, 2 to 3 percent of them suffer from this problem.

In order to help parents and individuals address Nocturnal Enuresis (another term for bedwetting), organizations and companies came up with bedwetting products  to help deal with this problem. Some of these bedwetting products that are commercially available in the market today include bedwetting alarms, bedwetting books and waterproof mattresses. Other bedwetting products that made it on the list are waterproof overlays and sleeping bag liners plus bedwetting sprays and solutions to get rid of bedwetting stains and smells on articles.

a. Bedwetting Alarms. These bedwetting products and devices are typically attached to the nightwear of the child and are usually composed of a sensor to detect moisture. When it detects wetness, an alarm goes off in order to wake the sleeping child to go the bathroom and relieve himself.

Studies show that these bedwetting products treat bedwetting long-term with an accuracy of 60 to 80 percent.

There are certain bedwetting issues parents have to consider when they want to buy bedwetting products for their children. Aside from this, there are a lot of bedwetting alarms available in the market. Because of these, Renee Mercer, the author of "Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness: A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Bedwetting" and a pediatric nurse who specializes in Enuresis, gives the following guidelines when buying and using bedwetting products especially bedwetting alarms:

  • Try to buy bedwetting alarms that gives off a loud sound when it detects moisture. Some of these bedwetting products make use of vibrations that do not wake up the child when they wet their beds.
  • If a child is a deep sleeper and the alert given off by a bedwetting alarm does not wake the child, then a device with an intercom located in the parents' bedroom can help. This way, the parents can wake their child when the alarm sounds off.
  • Bedwetting products should be effective all the time and this should be especially true for bedwetting alarms so that children will learn consistently. It is therefore recommended for parents to check that the bedwetting alarm they buy does not easily get unattached especially if their child moves a lot in bed and is a restless sleeper. Parents should not forget to attach the bedwetting alarm on the spot where the first drop of moisture is expected to fall.
  • Other bedwetting products such as underwear with pouches where the sensors can be placed are also available. This ensures that the bedwetting alarm will be difficult to displace and get unattached.

b. Books on Bedwetting. These books are bedwetting products that discuss and help parents deal with the problem of bedwetting with their children. Some are intended for parents to read and some are for children to help them overcome bedwetting. Some bedwetting books that parents can read include Howard J. Bennet's "Waking Up Dry: A Guide to Help Children Overcome Bedwetting" and Renee Mercer's "Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness: A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Bedwetting". Bedwetting books for children, on the other hand, include "Sammy the Elephant and Mr. Camel", "Do Little Mermaids Wet Their Beds?", and Caroline Levine's "David's Secret Soccer Goals".

c. Waterproof mattress pads. This is one of the bedwetting products that help protect the mattress from urine and other liquid to soak into the bed.

d. Waterproof mattress covers and pillow covers. These two bedwetting products work like waterproof mattress pads in making sure that spills, stains and bedwetting do not seep into the bed's mattress.

e. Waterproof sleeping bag liner. Children and bedwetting adults cannot sacrifice their interest in camping because of their problem. Because of this, bedwetting products such as waterproof sleeping bag liners were made to make sure that sleeping bags are protected should bedwetting occurs during the night.

f. Urine odor and stain removers. These bedwetting products were designed to remove urine odors and stains on various articles and furniture such as mattresses, floors, carpets, clothes and so many others.
